The Inspector General of Police Okoth Ochola continues to make changes in the command structure with new officers being appointed including the commandant of the Police Flying Squad.
D/SSP Peter Kakonge was on Monday night appointed to take over from Herbert Muhangi who was recently transferred from the leadership of the Squad to the Human Resource department.
Kakonge has been a detective stationed at CID Headquarters in Kibuli, Kampala.
Before Muhangi took charge, Flying Squad’s brand had faced a major blow with its leaders being accused of extortion, corruption, abuse of office and torture.
Some were arrested and remanded for several crimes including kidnap, robbery and murder.
It was earlier thought newly-created Organised Crime Unit headed by D/SSP Mark Paul Odong would replace Flying Squad.
But the appointment of Kakonge highlights the police chiefs’ determination to keep the Flying Squad operational.
In the new reshuffle, Ochola transferred high ranking officers from the CID.
For example, D/ACP Isaac Oketcho has been moved from CID headquarters to Special Investigations Department (SID) Kireka as Acting ACP Commercial Transactional crimes.
ChimpReports understands D/SSP Peter Muwonge leaves CID headquarters to serve as trainer of detectives while Hosea Manyindo will head media crimes section.
D/SSP Okello Obura moves from CID headquarters to Kiira where he will take charge as the Regional CID officer while D/SSP Sulaiman Kabuye has been reinstated and transferred to Rwenzori as regional CID officer.
D/SP Willy Kalimbano shifts from Kiboga to the Railway Police as regional CID officer.
Officials said the new deployments are aimed at strengthening the force in executing its mandate.
