Moses Bigirwa, a member of Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) — the youth wing for Democratic Party (DP) has been charged and remanded to Luzira prison for defaming the government.
Bigirwa, who also an activist of the People Power political pressure group was arraigned before the Makerere Law Development Centre (LDC) court where he was charged with uttering false information.
State alleges that the suspect defamed the Government claiming there was a plan to assassinate Kyadondo East Legislator Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka ‘Bobi wine’
In his plea before the LDC court grade one magistrate Roseline Nsenge, Bigirwa denied the charges brought against him and asked the trial magistrate to release him on bail.
Through his lawyer Samuel Muyizzi, he informed court that the offences against him are bailable, he has a fixed place of abode and he has substantial sureties ready to stand in for him.
Bigirwa presented three sureties; Kawempe Division Mayor Emmanuel Serunjogi, the Chairman for DP in Kawempe south Hamis Bashiru and the DP Youths leader for Kamwokya zone Rodgers Mukama.
State prosecutor Roseline Kipolwa didn’t object to this bail application but left it to court’s discretion, asking nonetheless, for stringent conditions against the applicant in case the magistrate decides to release him.
The magistrate however, decided to remand Bigirwa to Luzira prison until the 9thJanuary which is Wednesday next week when he will provide a ruling on the bail.
Bigirwa was arrested on 29th December 2018 after appearing on a talk show on Top Radio where he allegedly claimed government intended to shoot Bobi Wine while in Arua.
He also accused President Yoweri Museveni of favouring one tribe when it comes to governance on the same show.
