First Lady and Minister for Karamoja Affairs Hon. Janet Museveni has requested the RDCs in the seven Karamoja Districts to monitor the implementation of the Livelihood Investment Support  program under the Second Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF2) and ensure that it directly benefits the people to create wealth at household level and improve their incomes.

She was addressing a public rally at Alakas Primary School in Amudat Sub County recently after she commissioned the Alakas Health Centre II Out-patients’ block. This is one of the projects constructed under the NUSAF 2 Community Infrastructure Rehabilitation Investments component in Amudat District.

Mrs. Janet Museveni said the Livelihood Investment Support program which has subprojects like cattle rearing, seek http://chesapeakecatsanddogs.org/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/products/photocrati_nextgen/modules/nextgen_other_options/templates/thumbnail_options_tab.php animal traction, visit web goat rearing, more about dairy and poultry had stalled since animals could not be distributed to households because of the quarantine imposed after an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Karamoja and the neighbouring Districts.

“Now that the quarantine has been lifted I hope this programme under which Amudat District was allocated 250 million shillings will start benefitting the people and they will start making meaningful income from it”, she added.

She encouraged the people of Amudat to also actively participate in the Public works programme component and generate income from tree planting, community roads, culvert installations, drainage works, valley dams and bridge construction. She also urged them to plant the tree seedlings that are being distributed to restore the environment and ensure that some change is seen in the fields of Amudat District.

She pledged to give Amudat some walking tractors to enable them cultivate their own food instead of depending on food aid and also said the Karamoja Affairs Ministry would in future explore the possibility of establishing a dipping tank at the valley tanks being constructed in each parish in Karamoja.

The Minister also toured a farmer field school funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Nakasepen village in Amudat which teaches farmers how to grow cabbages and other crops to promote food security. She observed the need for more networking between the Karamoja Affairs Ministry and FAO to ensure that communities benefit more from the various interventions

The Director NUSAF 2 Dr. Robert Limlim said the infrastructure constructed in Karamoja under NUSAF 2 will benefit generations because of the quality standards.

The Woman MP Amudat District Rosemary Nauwat appreciated the current peace that has enabled the infrastructure development in the region.

“The cows are happy and the mothers are equally happy because they no longer have to travel long distances in search of water”, she reported.

Valley tanks have been constructed in 11 out of the 13 Parishes in Amudat District.

The public rally was also addressed by the Country Representative FAO Alhaji Momodou Jallow who said they are committed to continue supporting the Government of Uganda to achieve the objective of a food secure community.  He welcomed dialogue and consultations with the Karamoja Affairs Ministry to enable formulation of better strategies to improve the food security and livelihoods of the Karimojong.
