Pastor Yiga Remanded to Kitalya Prison

Mwanga ii grade one Magistrate Timothy Lumunye has charged Pastor Augustine Yiga of Revival Church Kawaala with an “doing an act likely to spread infection” contrary to Section 171 of Penal Code Act.

Pastor Yiga informed court that he understood the charges read against him, but pleaded not guilty.

Through his lawyers, he asked court to release him on bail on grounds that, the offence is bailable before the same court, he has a fixed place of abode and that he is a responsible Pastor with children.

He also presented in court three people from his church whom he asked court to consider as substantial sureties who will ensure that he turns up in court whenever he is required.

The Magistrate has set 6th April as the date when he will deliver his ruling on Yiga’s bail application.

The pastor was therefore remanded to Kitalya Government Prison in Mityana district.

Ever since the outbreak of COVID 19 in the country, all new suspects are remanded to the new facility in fear of spreading of Coronavirus to prisoners in Luzira

Yiga was arrested last week on allegations of spreading false information against the COVID 19 pandemic.


Prosecution contends that Pastor Augustine Yiga on 27th March 2020 while at Revival church Kawaala in Kampala district and while appearing on various Television stations, he said there is no Coronavirus in Uganda and Africa at large, well knowing that such words are likely to cause spread of COVID 19 which is dangerous to life.
