Pastor Iga Undermined Gov’t Effort In Fighting Covid19 – Police

Police have arrested city Pastor Augustine Iga of Revival Church Kawala, Rubaga Division in Kampala over false utterances and passing harmful propaganda relating to the current Corona Virus (COVID 19) pandemic in the country.

According to Police, the Pastor is suspected to have said, in a video that went viral, that the Corona Virus is not in Uganda.

“The video that went viral undermines government efforts in fighting the COVID 19 pandemic and exposes the public to dangers of laxity in observing the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health on its control and prevention,” said Kampala Metropolitan police in a statement released on Saturday

Police said that the action of the pastor promotes the spread of the COVID 19 and can therefore be considered as a direct attack on the people of the Republic of Uganda.

The suspect who was first held at suspect at Old Kampala Police Station, has been transferred to CID headquarters in Kibuli where he will be interviewed to establish the motive behind the dangerous utterances.

The law enforcement body also cautioned the public about sharing alarming information about the pandemic

“We appeal to the public to desist from making false or alarming utterances concerning COVID 19 and disregard information not from authorized government structures,” said police.

According to the Minister of Health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, the total number of Coronavirus cases in Uganda have since risen to 23.

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) boss Irene Kaggwa on on Saturday urged the public to be “socially responsible in sharing accurate and evidence-based information on social media, and avoid starting or forwarding unverified news report or fake news to others in the community.”

Let us heed this advice and join hands to fight COVID19,” she advised, adding, “Rumour and misinformation undermine that communication and trust, instead fuelling paranoia, fear, panic and stigma.”
