Parliament has summoned Justice Minister Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu to appear before the House on Thursday and explain how eight senior officials of the Electoral Commission were sacked.
On Tuesday, this website reported that the eight officials, including Mr Sam Rwakoojo, the Secretary to the Commission, and Jotham Taremwa, the public relations officer, were shown the exit allegedly over corruption.
The officials are said to have rejected a ballot printing bid from a German firm, Veridos Identity Solutions, despite the President recommending the company.
Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga on Wednesday said the minister must explain the ballot printing saga that led to the sacking of the officials.
“The Minister of Justice and the Attorney General must come here and explain what is going on at the EC. Let the Clerk put it on the order paper,” Ms Kadaga said.
This was after MPs led Opposition Chief Whip Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda said the sackings at EC are controversial since they work in favour of Yoweri Museveni who wants to run for president in the 2021 elections.
“I come from a party that is preparing to participate in the elections. We have read in the newspapers that senior officials of the Electoral Commission have been fired because they cancelled a deal by one of the candidates. He is actually a sole candidate,” Mr Nganda said.
