Parish Chairman Arrested Over Mob Justice

Police in Ntungamo have in detention a local council chairperson in connection to the death of a 22-year-old man, who was lynched for stealing sugar cane.

The suspect is Ben Tarimwima, the LC II Chairperson of Kiziiba Parish in Nyakyera sub county, while the deceased has been identified as Peter Byamugisha, a resident of Kishojwa village in the same parish.

The victim was reportedly clobbered by a mob after he was caught with stolen sugarcane from one of the locals’ garden.

The incident happened on May 8th 2020.

Byamugisha is said to have sought refuge in the LC II chairman’s house after the mob came chasing after him.

The chairman Tarimwima, however, tied Byamugisha up with a rope and handed him to the mob which beat him as they dragged him to the former’s office.

Byamugisha was later dumped in a bush where he was picked by crime preventers and taken to Nyakyera health centre III where he died upon arrival.

Ntungamo RDC George Bakunda upon learning of the incident, intervened and ordered the arrest of Tarimwima and for the body to be exhumed and examined.

Godes Twinamatsiko the Ntungamo OCCID D/ASP said the hunt for the rest of the mob members is still on going.

“Yes it’s true we arrested the chairman and others are still at large to face the court over the reported murder” Twinamatsiko said.
