Uganda Police Force’s Bomb Squad has this Tuesday diffused a bomb in Bugolobi, a leafy Kampala suburb, a development that will stun the nation.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said the force
“carried out successful controlled explosion.”
This, according to Owoyesigire, was after a group of contractors who were excavating along Luthuli Avenue in Bugolobi “discovered an explosive device that was buried deep underground.”
It remains unclear how an explosive ended up in what is considered one of the most secure suburbs in the country’s capacity.
Owoyesigire said upon alerting the police after discovering the explosive, the “officers rushed to the scene before exploding the device in a controlled surrounding.”
He said the device was already tampered with and experts adviced that it be exploded.
”No injuries nor damage to properties was reported during the exercise,” he emphasised.
Such cases are rare in Kampala.
It remains to be seen if the explosive was being hidden by dangerous elements or was abandoned there during the civil wars in the 1980s.
Police did not provide the specifications of the recovered bomb.
However, police commended the public for “informing us on time and to at all times report such matters that seem unusual or unknown to them to authorities.”
