At least 16 people were killed and over 20 sustained serious injuries in a number of road accidents over the weekend.
On Sunday evening, 8 people died instantly in an accident involving 2 trailers and a taxi at Bulyantete, near Lugazi town, along Kampala- Jinja highway.
The accident caused by one of the trailers that was overtaking hitting a taxi.
Over 11 people according to police spokesman AIGP Asan Kasingye were rushed to Kawolo hospital in critical condition.
On Friday, 2 separate accidents killed 4 people along the Kampala-Mityana highway.
Kasingye revealed that 4 people died instantly on Saturday at Nkalwe along the Masaka – Mbarara road when a taxi collided with a Toyota Premio.
10 people were left injured.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, Kasingye said despite the f Fika Salama operations on major highways; drivers tend to drive recklessly after leaving the police check points.
“We identified black spots on the roads and deployed but drivers are exploiting the gaps where they know Fika Salama operations are not and drive recklessly, “Kasingye said.
He warned drivers to control themselves because police cannot be deployed everywhere along the road to help check of those driving recklessly.
The passengers, according to the police mouthpiece should also warn drivers on behaving indecently while on the road.
“Fika Salama had done its role but it is upon the people to behave responsibly.”
“If you notice a driverbeing reckless, storm out of the vehicle. We can save our lives if we are cautious of how we are being driven. “
He said that if passengers and drivers had behaved responsibly, the accidents that claimed lives over the weekend could have been averted.
Police last week launched the ‘Fika Salama Re-loaded’ on all major highways in a bid to check on increas ighways in a bid to check on increasing accidents .
