Residents in Mityana Municipality this morning broke into a violent protest over the arrest, detention and alleged torture of their MP Francis Zaake.
Police reportedly used live ammunition to disperse the protesters, some of whom sustained gunshot wounds.
There were also reports that officers opened fire on a commuter tax which was carrying football fans, and was mistaken to be part of the riot.
Police spokesperson Emilian Kayima confirmed Sunday afternoon that at least one person was shot dead in the riot.
Kayima identified the deceased Samuel Ssekitoleko, a resident of Myanzi in Kasanda district.
“It is regrettable and sad,” said the police mouthpiece, adding that the officer who killed the protester is being hunted.
Another five people according to Kayima were hospitalized, and one of them Derrick Ssengooba was discharged shortly afterwards
The area MP Zaake remains in comma at a Mengo Hospital in Kampala, where he was dropped by a military truck, havening spent two days in dentition, where he was allegedly tortured severely.
The Police spokesman urged all people especially those in Mityana and those plying that route “to keep calm and desist from any activities that break the law.”
