With the national volleyball league taking yet another break, attention turned to the start of the new national beach volleyball season at Lido Beach, Entebbe.
KAVC’s Shilla Omuriwe paired with KCCA’s Sharon Pajije to draw first blood and take top spot.
The pair defeated pre-tournament favourites Joanitah Nabutto and Kauther Kagoya in the tie break in the final.
Having taken the opening set 21-17, the eventual champions struggled in the second set and they fell 17-21.
They would later reorganise themselves to take the decisive set 15-07 and clinch top spot.
Omuriwe / Pajije had earlier defeated the pair of Emily Kansiime and Flavia Kanyesigye in straight sets (2-0) in the first round. They cruised 21-4 and 21-10.
They faced and similarly beat Irene Muhumuza / Gertrude Nakiwolo 2-0 (21-10, 21-08) in the second round to reach the final.
Nabbuto / Kagoya had defeated Jackline Twikirize / Proscovia Nsimire (2-0) 21-17, 21-07 in the first round.
They later beat the experienced duo of Vivian Adeke and Maria Nanfuka in a tiebreak (2-1) 21-15, 09-21, 15-09 to make the final.
In the men’s category, KAVC’s Mathew Mwenyi and UCU Doves’ Mark Okurut defeated Emma Elanyu / Emma Kato 2-1 (22-20, 19-21, 15-9) in the men’s final.
Mwenyi and Okurut took the first set 22-20 before Elanyu and Kato recovered to take the second 21-19 to force a decisive.
Eventual winners took care of the business winning the set 15-9 to clinch top spot.
The next local tour is slated for September 29-30 at Lido beach.
