Omoro: Battered Grandmother Gets New House Amid Calls for Social Protection

Leaders in Omoro district have urged community members to adopt Social Protection for the Vulnerable if they are to avert Social disasters and cultural erosion

The leaders made the call on Friday at the hand-over of a new home build for an 82-year-old woman Lucy Anek of Amilobo Village, Ongako Sub-county in Omoro district.

Mego Anek was filmed in April being  clobbered by her own grandson, a one Brian Okello, 25, who was later arrested, prosecuted and sentenced to 6 years’ imprisonment

The beating of Mego Anek caused a lot of outrage on social media prompting many people to seek Justice for her and find a way of supporting her.

Hon. Catherine Lamwaka, Omoro Woman Member of Parliament noted at the hand over that the Community has a very big role to play in providing social protection.

‘’I urge members of the community to take the matter of social protection very seriously; especially for the vulnerable like the elderly and the children.’’  Said Lamwaka.

Mr. Douglas Peter Okello, the Omoro district Chairman in his speech faulted drug abuse for the increasing violence and neglect of elderly people in the community.

‘’Abuse of drugs like Marijuana, Alcoholism are some of the things breaking our culture of social protection to the elderly people’’ Said Mr. Okello.


The Omoro chairman urged children to respect the elderly and desist from drug abuse.

‘’Anyone who commits a crime in our community will be arrested and prosecuted.’’ Said Mr. Okello

Ms. Flavia Teddy Okello, the Director of Flama Uganda, who also chaired the committee to Construct the house for Mego Lucy Anek said that battering of elderly people is regarded as a curse and a misfortune by the Acholi people.

Ms. Okello added that as Flama Uganda is coming up with strategic Proposal to building an elderly care Center adding that government of Uganda should come and support this initiative

The house built at a cost of 19 million shilling although over 27 million shillings was collected from well-wishers.

They also constructed a new   2-door pit latrine for Mego Anek, and the balance will be used for her welfare and putting solar light in the house.
