Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, Rtd Maj Gen Matayo Kyaligonza is alive.
Foreign Affairs Ministry officials dismissed the death rumours, saying the soldier-turned diplomat was going about his duties in Burundi’s capital, Bujumbura.
“He was in office this Tuesday evening,” said a source in Bujumbura who’s not authorized to speak to the media.
“I have talked to him. He’s well.”
Efforts to contact Kyaligoza were yet to bear fruit.
Reports which went viral on social media indicated that Kyaligonza, a decorated bush war combatant, had succumbed to COVID-19 at Kampala Hospital.
The rumours gained traction considering Kyaligonza was last year admitted at Nakasero Hospital in critical condition before recovering.
“It’s all fake news,” said a Foreign Ministry official.
