The only surviving brother of former President Apollo Milton Obote, Obadiah Akaki has died at the age of 96.
According to family members Mzee Akaki died on Friday morning at their ancestral home in Akokoro Sub County, Apac district.
Lira Municipality Member of Parliament, Jummy Akena Obote confirmed the passing on of his uncle, who died a strong National Resistance Movement (NRM) party supporter, in a brief statement posted on social media on Friday.
“My 96+ year old Uncle Obadiah Akaki passed away in the early hours of this morning from his home in Akokoro. Funeral arrangements will be communicated later,” said Akena.
Obadiah became a friend of President Yoweri Museveni in November 2010 after astonishingly joining NRM to the bemusement of many Uganda People Congress members, who then did not expect a member of Obote family to join the NRM which overthrew their government.
In an interview in 2010, shortly after Akaki’s defection, Akena told a local newspaper that the family had known long before that the former was a NRM supporter.
The late joined NRM together with former Minister Rebecca Otengo, formerly UPC and later FDC, currently serving as Uganda’s Ambassador in Ethiopia, former Maruzi MP, David Ebong from UPC and former Lira District LCV Chairman Fanko Ojur also from UPC. Ojur is now a Senior Presidential Advisor on Lango Affairs.
Another defection announced on the same day, when Museveni was campaigning for the fourth term, was that of former UPC Mobilizer, Julius Peter Moto. Moto is now serving as Uganda’s Ambassador in London.
Akaki told the crowd in 2010 that he and Museveni fought the government of Amin together and they both lived in Exile in Tanzania.
