Nyege Nyege Festival: Fans Demand For Government Funding

Nyege Nyege Music Festival fans have called on for Government’s support in the event.

According to them, the four-Day event attracts thousands of people across the globe and that means a lot of money generated for Government’s revenue.

“When all these foreigners come, they pay taxes and on top of that, they book all the hotels in Jinja and the neighboring towns.

For all the time the festival is happening, both Government and Locals will be benefiting in terms of trade which mostly earns income directly to the locals exhibiting different items such as crafts,African designer clothes among others,” said a one Alice from Mbale.

Nyege Nyege, which stands for Peace, Love and abundant Joy, for Underground  Music and musicians in Africa, from Africa or with a deep interest in getting to know the Continent better, it stands for Fun and Curiosity and pushing boundaries always with a sense inclusivity and an invitation to wonder.

For those 4 days at least, guests are able to have the best time of their life and discover Uganda, the Pearl of Africa.

The festival which was started way back in 2015, is now considered the most important 4-day international music festival in East Africa for both its one of a kind curation and its unique East African party vibe.

This year, the festival was recognized with ‘Best of all Event of the Year’ award from the Tourism Ministry.

The Festival’s aim is to showcase all the exciting development on the East African scene, to show daring projects and give a real voice to the underground, making it a highlight for both audiences and musicians alike.

Revelers having Fun

Nyege Nyege has faced critism from some of the Government officials, saying that the event is ground for immorality in all its ugliness.

Last year, the organisers faced negativity from Government entities including the Pornography Control Committee headed by the State Minister for Ethics and Integrity Fr. Simon Lokodo.

Lokodo attempted to block the event, regarding it as evil. According to the Minister, the event supports all sorts of evil acts including open sex and indecent dressing among others.

“But we have seen the Tourism Ministry coming on board to support the festival.

That means it’s beneficial to the country, where on earth do you have a four-day event which contributes a lot to the country than those every day events and you are against it?” Exclaimed one of the Fans.
