Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu has set August 1st 2019 to deliver her judgement in the cyber-harassment case against former Makerere University Researcher Dr Stella Nyanzi.
This followed the magistrate’s decision not to grant Nyanzi permission to summon voluntary defence witnesses via newspapers.
The trial magistrate pointed out that she had given ample time to defence counsels Isaac Ssemakadde and Derrick Bazzeketta to present witnesses before court but they failed since 26th June 2019
This she said, prompted her to close the defence case without Nyanzi presenting witnesses or defending herself against allegations of attacking the privacy of President Museveni and that of his late mother Esteri Kokundeka through posting a poem on her personal Facebook page
Counsel Ssemakadde didn’t welcome the court’s decision which he described as unfair.
Nyanzi was remanded to Luzira in October last year on offenses of cyber harrasment and offensive communication
She’s been a rare kind of prisoner, as she unprecedented turned down an opportunity to be released on bail.
The magistrate before commencement of the trial informed her of her right to bail but she rejected it saying she was ready to hear the whole trial while coming from Luzira
On 21st June this year , court ruled that prosecution had made out a case against Stellah Nyanzi and ordered her to defend her self against the said allegations.
