Scores of members of the People Power Movement and the newly formed National Unity Platform (NUP) converged at the party offices in Kamwokya to commemorate people that lost lives mostly in the group’s different clashes with security forces over the past two years.
The NUP President Hon Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) announced today they are designating this date, the 13th of August as the party’s Heroes Day, which will be marked annually.
On this day, in 2018 in what is arguably the turning point in Bobi Wine’s political career, Mr Yasin Kawuma, his driver was shot dead in the fracas during the Arua parliamentary by elections.
Bobi Wine and his group were accused of hurling projectiles at President Yoweri Museveni’s motorcade who was campaigning for the NRM candidate in the same town.
Speaking at the event today, Bobi Wine named some of the “heroes” being remembered as Yasin Kawuma; Moses Mboowa, Asuman Walyendo, Michael Arinda (Ziggy Wine), Hannington Sewankambo, Hakim Sekwamwa, Ritah Nabukenya, Daniel Kyeyune , Charlese Mutyabule and John Bosco Kibalama who is still missing.
“On this date two years ago, my brother Yasin Kuwuma took a bullet that was meant for me. If he was still alive, I would be dead. I owe my life to him,” Bobi Wine said.
Meanwhile on the same event, the NUP party officially welcomed dozens of members of the Democratic Party breakaway group, the DP Bloc.
The group that includes several DP MPs, NEC members, senior party leaders and lower level leaders, have had long standing misunderstandings with the party establishment under President Norbert Mao.
Those that officially joined NUP include MPs:
Medard Lubega Segona
Emmanuel Sempala Kigozi
Other senior DP members that joined the NUP include Legal Advisor Samuel Muyizi, former DP Spokesman Kenneth Kakande, Florence Namayana, Matia Lwanga Bwanika, Former Presidential candidates Samuel Lubega and Abed Bwanika; singer Joseph Mayanja Chameleon, former Deputy Kampala Lord Mayor Sulaiman Kindandala, Vincent Mayanja, Godwin Angalia among others.
