Kawempe North MP Latiff Sebagala has officially pulled out of the Kampala Lord Mayor race, citing a need to cohesion in his own party and the wider opposition.
Sebagala announced Tuesday that he will not be seeking election for the mayoral seat.
The announcement was unexpected, as it came just days after he was handed the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag to challenge the incumbent, Erias Lukwago.
He beat singer Joseph Mayanja (Chameleone) to the race.
Addressing the press today, Latif said he had decided to pull out of the race for the interest of his party.
“I have taken this decision to withdraw from the Mayoral race in the best interest of the wider opposition and also given the fact that we have many conflicting interests within us an NUP,” he said.
“Members of NUP are supporting different candidates, and this may cost us to lose (sic) the city. That is why I have decided to take this decision.”
Sebagala went on to apologize to my part and to all Ugandans and those who had out their trust in him
He nonetheless vowed to continue supporting the NUP and its current leader Robert Kyagulanyi
The NUP was yet to comment on the decision and what their next move would be.
