Ntungamo District Council has passed a resolution that will see Ntungamo Health Training Institute renamed YK Museveni Health Institute of Applied Sciences.

The District Council made the resolution on Friday during a special sitting.

The institute, which was established by the district in July 2011 in Ruhaama County, was commissioned by President Museveni.

And now district leaders say naming it after him is in honor of the achievements President Museveni has made for Uganda.

The district LCV chairman, Mr Denis Singahache, who initiated the idea, said when the institute is named after YK Museveni, it will be a stepping stone to upgrade it to university status thus improving education standards in Ntungamo District.

“I had of Moi University, John F Kennedy University among others, why not YK Museveni University on our land?” Singahache said.

He noted that he was humbled to realize the dream of starting the nursing school in Ntungamo district and it has now yielded best fruits before he retired from active politics.

However, the councillor for Ntungamo Sub-county, Mr Mpirirwe Naboth, noted that instead of approving the proposal, the council should first consult the President.

The Chairperson Board of Governors of the Institute, Ms Aidah Nturanabo Sanyu, said that the proposal is overdue because President Museveni has done many things for Ntungamo district hence should be remembered.

However, some residents said renaming the institute may make some parents to shun it, especially those who don’t support the President.

The principal of the institute, Mr Tukamuhabwa Wilber, welcomed the idea, saying that it will promote its status.

Ntungamo Health Training Institute currently offers certificate in Nursing and Midwifery and in May 2019, it will also start offering diplomas in nursing, midwifery, public health and clinical medicine, among other health related courses.
