Ntungamo Election Violence: Minister Rukutana Arrested

Police in Ntungamo have arrested State Minister for Labor Hon Mwesigwa Rukutana, who is accused among others of instigating violence in yesterday’s NRM primary elections in Ntungamo district.

The Minister was arrested along with his three bodyguards for allegedly shooting at his political opponents. He is detained at Ntungamo Police station.


Police says the Minister is facing attempted murder by shooting and malicious damage of property.

According to the Rwizi Regional Police spokesman Samson Kasasira, Rukutana at around 10am this morning, “intercepted a motor vehicle belonging to rival supporters who he had an argument with before pulling out his gun and shooting at the car; injuring the occupants who are nursing injuries”

Police says the injured victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition


Earlier this morning while commenting about the incident, Rukutana said he wanted to secure himself from armed people.”

“These people were armed. They came to my farm and blocked my family members from leaving our home,” Rukutana told ChimpReports in Ntungamo on Saturday.

“My guards went and I urged them to leave but they refused. So I was trying to secure myself,” he added.
