Barbie under Caring Hearts Uganda waged a war against the act of girls being married off when they are still young and girls missing class for 4 to 5 days every month because they are having their menstruation periods.
“We will team up and refuse to be married off while we are still young, we refuse to be laughed at during our menstruation. We are at war with anything that wants to keep us out of school be it our maturation process. Through CARING HEARTS UGANDA we have launched our war,” Barbie said.
Barbie and her team, with the help of Bobi Wine visited Bukomero SS last Friday and gave out free reusable pads to each adolescent girl for better menstrual management. There were also free HIV testing and counseling opportunities.
“My sweet husband, the wind beneath my wings, my main cheer leader gave the students the wisest words of wisdom I’ve ever heard about life choices. We had free HIV testing and counseling. After all was said and done, students signed commitment cards promising not to engage in sexual activities until they complete school,” Barbie added.
Fans commended the Fire Base first family for their compassionate hearts and encouraged them to continue the good work as many village girls are still facing early marriages and menstrual management issues.
“Now that is what it means to live life with a purpose and lead by example. I will always salute the Kyagulanyi family, you are true role models,” a fan said.

Under the theme of ‘Excellence in social security in Africa’, the Forum provides a key platform for participants to share information and discuss the most important regional social security trends and priority issues in Africa.
Launched in 2008, the ISSA Good Practice Award programme is organized on a regional basis over a three-year cycle, and the competition for Africa in 2014 attracted 58 entries from 29 organizations in 22 countries – a significant increase compared to the previous competition in 2011.
NSSF Uganda was awarded Certificates of Merit for each of the good practices entries that it submitted. These included Mobile phone based service delivery, Stakeholder communication and engagement- Annual Members Meeting initiative and Institutionalization of a performance management system.
While receiving the awards, Edgar Birungi NSSF’s Marketing Manager said that the Fund was honoured by the continental gesture.
“NSSF Uganda has achieved major milestones over the last couple of years that have improved its operational and administrative capacities. The Fund deserves to be recognized for its good practices and innovations in the administration of social security that have resulted into better service delivery to members,” he said.
Birungi echoed that during the NSSF Members Meeting which is now an annual event, stakeholders and members of the Fund were updated on the Funds’ performance over the last five years and its future investment outlook.
“The performance of the Fund is testament to our commitment to being the social security provider of choice for our members and securing a better future for them after their working life. To date we have become a benchmark for other social security Funds in the region and we promise to continue delivering on our promise of offering our members with world class services,” he added.
The Forum involved 200 participants, primarily CEOs and senior managers of ISSA social security member organizations in Africa, as well as policy-makers, experts and representatives of international organizations. The competition recognizes good practices in the administration of social security. The ISSA Good Practice Award is given on a regional basis over a three-year cycle at each ISSA Regional Social Security Forum.
The Secretary General ISSA, Hans –Horst Konkolewsyk said that social security systems in Africa have made remarkable progress in extending coverage to populations, improving access and securing sustainability in a dynamic economic context.
“Bolstered by recognition of the positive role of social security for economic and social development, as well as strengthened political commitment, this progress has been based on the efforts of social security administrations to improve governance, performance and service quality,” he said.
This commitment of social security administrations in Africa to excellence has led to the implementation of innovations and good practices that are tailored to the specific challenges that social security is facing on this continent.
In the process of identifying suitable solutions, the exchange of experiences and the sharing of new developments constitute an important measure and the Forum provided a platform for these discussions between administrators, policy-makers and other members of the social security community.
NSSF has been recognized on many occasions for its outstanding services. The Fund won an award for Best Corporate Website during the 2014 Digital Impact Awards Africa.
It also scooped the Superbrands 2014 Award, UCC ACIA Business Excellence award 2013, ECASSA Winner on innovation 2013, was nominated for Best Africa Pension Scheme in the Africa investor Institutional Investment Awards 2013 and ranked amongst the Top 10 organizations in East Africa in Innovation in the C1O100 Annual awards competition.
