NRM Wins Iganga Woman MP Re-election, FDC Going to Court

Brenda Asinde aka Maama Maadi, the NRM candidate for the highly contested Iganga district woman MP has been declared winner, beating her main challenger Mariam Nantale on a difference of 19,120 votes.

The District Returning Officer, Mercy Ataho declared Brenda Asinde Suubi, the winner at 03:05am at the district headquarters with 43197votes followed by Mariam Nantale (FDC) who scored 24077 votes only.

Out of the 16 Sub Counties, NRM won 14 including the two Divisions (Northern and Central) within the Municipality.

The other contests included Babirye Asha (IND), who came third with 7052; Oliver Kwagala (IND) came fourth with 1212 votes while Aziza Kakerewe also independent came last with only 689

However, FDC’s Nantale has protested this win and vowed to go to court sighting vote bribery and intimidation by heavy armory that surrounded the area during the voting.

The campaigns were marred with violence coupled with clashes and skirmishes between the NRM and FDC supporters prompting heavy deployment of police.
