NRM Plans to Process Iron Ore in Kigezi Region, says Museveni

Addressing the press on Tuesday, Honourable Fred Omach, State Minister for Finance and ATI’s immediate Annual General Meeting Chair noted that when ATI was founded in 2001 many investors hesitated to do business in Africa and Uganda was no exception.

“ATI has changed the game by rewriting the story of African risk as something that is more realistic and tenable than what is often misrepresented in the international media. This has helped Uganda and many other countries to continue attracting investments and supporting increased trade with countries within Africa and abroad,” he said.

Uganda’s current Board member who is also the CEO of Padre Pio Insurance Brokers Ltd, Ms Irene Kego Oloya said ATI has provided significant support to Ugandan banks by guaranteeing their clients’ bonds and other trade transactions.

She noted that the company also extended its cover to project finance and medium-to-long term transactions.

“This is important for Uganda because this will help us attract much needed financing to projects in capital intensive sectors such as energy and roads construction,” she said.

ATI is also hosting a workshop for banks in Uganda to sensitize the lenders on its product that help to increase credit facilities to small and medium sized companies..

Since its first transaction in 2004, ATI has helped Uganda attract over Shs 9.5 trillion in trade and investments.

According to the insurance agency, in the first half of 2015, ATI has facilitated transactions worth over Shs 99 billion in the country.

The company has also paid claims in excess of Shs 3 billion.

This follows signing of the passenger Services Agreement between URC, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCAA) and Rift Valley Railways(RVR) in November to run the service as a pilot for a period of one year.

The commuter services will run four trips daily with the first train leaving the Namanve station at 6:30am and the second one at 7:35am.

The evening trains will be setting off from the Kampala station at 4:15 pm and 5:30 pm.

The estimated journey time is 40 minutes either way at a cost of Shs 1,500 per journey. A daily return ticket will cost Shs 2,500.

Eng. Kateeba said under the agreement, URC will be in charge of selling the tickets and customer care whereas RVR will operate the trains, construct and maintain the stations and halts at Kampala, Nakawa, Kireka, Namboole and Namanve.

“Government through KCCA will provide financial support to cover the shortfall on income against operational costs,” Eng. Kateeba said, adding that they have already received 1 billion shillings to start off with.

Eng. Kateeba said the results of the pilot will give the necessary data and information to gauge the viability of the routes by understanding the passenger numbers and other variables, so the partners can make a firm decision on how to proceed with the commuter rail services in Kampala going forward.

Charles Ouma, KCCA’s Legal Director said the commuter rail forms an integral part of KCCA’s long term transport master plan because it will reduce the pressure on road traffic particularly during the rush hours which have become increasingly problematic for city workers.

In order to improve services overall, Eng. Kateeba said the government and RVR have invested in the rehabilitation of key infrastructure such as the new rail inland container Depot at Mukono and purchase of new rolling stock.

He noted that the introduction of the passenger rail services represents just but another piece of the jigsaw in the transformation of the railway.

President Museveni who is also the NRM Presidential flag-bearer has said the NRM Government has plans to process iron ore in the Kigezi sub region.

“Rubanda is rich in iron ore resources. The NRM Government wants to build a big iron ore smelting plant. The gas from Lake Albert will be delivered to Butogota and the neighbouring areas to facilitate the processing of iron ore,” he said.

He said that the target was to produce and process one million tons of iron per day and revealed that the resources available were sufficient to cover a period of 45 to 50 years.

He observed that the country would benefit a lot because the processed iron today fetches US $ 550 per ton.

President Museveni said that the Government is committed to availing the youth with the necessary skills by providing a technical institute in every constituency, a move that would ensure that youth have more employment opportunities.

Museveni said his Government would extend electricity from the Muko junction off the Kabale – Kisoro road to benefit a number of places in the area including Muko, Nfasha, Rubanda Mission, Ikumba Health Centre and Bugyera.

He said that Ruhuriza and Kiyabe would also be provided with electricity under the planned program.

President Museveni informed the attentive crowd that NRM has made a lot of progress in the country because it started its service to the people by promoting unity.

He noted that the practice of unity and the fight against sectarianism has enabled the country to progress. He attributed the various achievements in the country to the peace that was ushered in by NRM.

He said that the NRM Government would expand the NAADS budget to facilitate the provision of more seedlings and breeding materials to the people.

He said that since the national revenue collection has expanded from Sh 5 billion in 1986 to Sh 13,000 billion today and that the Government’s capacity to deliver essential services has been boosted, adding that a lot has been achieved because of government prioritization policy.

He called on the voters to support the old man with a hat and all the NRM flag bearers to continue with transforming the country.

The Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, who welcomed President Museveni to Kabale District, assured him of the people’s support.

Prime Minster Rugunda observed that Uganda had become a laughing stock among many nations but President Museveni’s outstanding contribution has enabled it to be transformed into a great nation.
