The leadership of the parallel Buganda Caucus established during the just concluded Kyankwanzi NRM retreat has revealed that their major goal is to ensure that no one within central region stands against President Yoweri Museveni.
Addressing journalists at Parliament on Thursday, Kabula county Member of Parliament, James Kakooza, the chairperson of newly created NRM Buganda Caucus and Spokesman, Simeo Nsubuga stated that they are going to safeguard Museveni’s sole candidature within the region.
“During the recent retreat in Kyankwanzi, a number of resolutions were made, the main resolution being that of sole candidature of our national chairman,” said Kakooza.
Kakooza, who is the former State Minister for Primary Health Care and champion of lifting presidential term limit in 2005, noted that their mission is also to secure victory for Museveni.
“We are committed to securing a big win for Museveni in the upcoming elections and also ensure that no one from Central stands against him,” noted Kakoza.
The duo criticized the current Buganda Caucus leadership under Johnson Muyanja Ssenyonga for creating a barrier between MPs from Buganda and Museveni.
Muyanja and 11 other NRM MPs from Buganda voted no against the then contentious removal of presidential age limit.
“Some of our members including the chairman voted no against (presidential) age limit and this has been a big challenge as far as the Buganda caucus is concerned. The current trend is against the history of previous chairpersons who strongly supported NRM and its activities,” said Simeo Nsubuga
According to the MPs, the Buganda Caucus, which is the biggest and most powerful regional Caucus, has not met the President for the last 3 years.
