Zambia 50-43 Botswana
Hosts Zambia began their quest for a slot at next year’s World Cup on a bright note defeating Botswana in the opening game.
Despite trailing in the first set, Zambia rallied back to edge past Botswana 50-43 in the game played on Monday.
The South African derby lived up to the billing with either side putting up a brilliant performance.
Botswana led the first set 13-11 but this would be the end of their short lived happiness as the home side returned improved.
In the second set, Zambia scored 16 goals compared to Botswana’s 11 and hence led 27-22 heading into halftime.
Botswana improved in the third quarter scoring 13 goals while limiting Zambia to 11 and thus cutting the gap to just 3 goals(38-35) heading into the final and decisive set.
However, Zambia came out of the blocks to score 12 goals, four more than their opponents and thus winning the game 50-43.
Action continues on Tuesday with four games on card including Uganda the defending champions of the Africa Netball Cup taking on Namibia.
Hosts Zambia return to court against Kenya,Zimbabwe will have two games, first against Malawi and later on wounded Botswana.
The winner of the tournament will qualify for the 2019 World Cup in Liverpool, England but will also be crowned as African champions.
Uganda won last year’s edition at home with Peace Proscovia emerging as the tournament MVP.
