Nebbi: Court Nullifies Election of NRM’s Rashid; Orders Fresh Polls

Nebbi High Court Judge Anthony Ojuko has Thursday morning nullified the election of the ruling NRM MP Hashim Rashid as Nebbi Municipality, sparking wide celebrations across the town.

Police had to use teargas to disperse crowds.

The judge ruled that Ojuko was “illegally nominated” as he “lacked authentic academic papers” before ordering for fresh elections.

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago today appeared before the Court in Nebbi receive the judgment in the election petition filed by the FDC candidate, Robert Onega.

This means the Electoral Commission will have to commence preparations for new elections in the Municipality.

The Nebbi District Returning Officer Raymond Kasarale declared Hashim with 4,283 votes as winner of the race followed by Onega who garnered 4,159 votes.

But FDC’s regional coordinator and Obongi county MP Hassan Kaps Fungaro contested the outcome, citing voter malpractices and rigging.

He also said FDC would challenge the outcome of the election in courts of law.
