National Habitat Day Celebrations Head To Busia

Uganda will join the rest of the world to commemorate world habitat day on Monday 7th October 2019 at Busia municipality in Busia district.

The day is observed to honor the UN General Assembly resolution of 17th December 1985 to set aside the first Monday of October each year as World Habitat Day worldwide.

The Director of Housing in the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Mr Dave Kayangayanga said the day provides countries, communities and all stakeholders in the Housing sector an opportunity to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic human right to adequate shelter.

The celebrations will be held under the theme “Frontier technologies as an innovative tool to transform waste management”

Meanwhile, Kayangayanga highlighted some developments and initiatives undertaken by ministry of lands such as development of the National Housing Policy (2016) which provides a framework for housing development in the country, National urban policy (2017) which provides a framework for managing the urbanization process in the country and enactment of condominium property Act (2001) that provides for vertical housing developments especially in urban areas to help contain urban sprawl.

Others include enactment of physical planning Act (2010), development of landlord tenant Bill (2018), development of national waste management guidelines and currently developing national physical development plan (NPDP) to guide spatial and human settlement developments in the country.
