Mystery As Umeme Deactivates Twitter Account

Ugandans this morning woke up to confusion following the disappearance of the official Twitter handle of utilities company Umeme.

The verified account of the power suppliers seemed to have been deactivated by publication of this story.

The company was yet to provide official reasons for the mishap on its other social media platforms.

With over 102,000 followers, the Umeme Twitter handle has been a major source of information and updates on power supply.

Umeme spokesperson Mr Stephen Ilungole said in a message that the deactivation of the account was because of what he called “ongoing procedural verification by Twitter Inc.”

It’s unclear what this entails. The Umeme Twitter handle was already verified.

While Twitter can revoke verification an account like it did with the Ugandan Parliament handle, Ilungule didn’t explain why the account had to be deactivated.

“Our handle is temporarily unavailable,” he said. “….it will be restored soon. However all channels such as WhatsApp, email, Facebook, Toll free lines are all available,” he said.

The mysterious termination of the account comes at a time when power supply in different parts of the country became more intermittent.

Late last week, a strong storm which damaged various power lines led to shut down of nearly all lines in the capital Kampala.

Stable supply has yet to be fully restored.

Many Ugandans took to twitter to share their frustration.
