St Andrews’ Church in Jinja was on Monday engulfed in grief at the memorial service of Sheila Mbonimpa, the wife of former Jinja East Member of Parliament Nathan Igeme Nabeta.
Mbonimpa, who is also the sister of Maurice Mugisha, the Deputy Executive Director of Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), perished in the boat accident on Saturday evening on Lake Victoria.
Hundreds of relatives and friends turned up for the memorial service led by Rev Paul Hannington Ssuubi.
Nabeta said that whereas his wife was one of the best swimmers, it was God’s plan to take her life.
He also apologized for spending a long time without coming to church.
Sheila’s friend and survivor who only identified herself as Samalie narrated the events that unfolded on that fateful day.
“We were together on the boat when it developed a mechanical problem but we both had life jackets. However, when the vessel started sinking, I jumped off and started swimming on my own until I got ashore.
“When I got ashore, it was dark and started looking for Sheila because I knew she also knew how to swim and expected her to be ashore as well,” she said before breaking down.
Mugisha thanked the mourners, relatives and friends for turning up in big numbers and being with them during this trying moment.
Mr Mugisha said burial will take place on Tuesday at their ancestral home in Kisoro District.
Rev Ssuubi asked believers to desist from living a reckless life because there’s time when everybody will account for his or her deeds before the Lord.
He also tasked Mr Nabeta to bridge the gap his wife has left behind because she was a regular Churchgoer.
