Godfrey Aine Kaguta, one of the Mawogola North MP candidates has abruptly withdrawn from the race just hours to the election.
Aine, a brother to President Yoweri Museveni reportedly communicated through his campaign team that he was withdrawing from the race, without providing reasons why.
The development is the culmination of one of the goriest parliamentary contests this election season has seen.
Aine’s exit now leaves the door wide open for Ms Shartsi Musherure, daughter of Minister Sam Kutesa to take the seat.
Both Aine and Musherure had campaigned as independents after the NRM refused to acknowledge the victory of the former in the party primaries which were marred with violence.
The party decision followed a petition by Ms Musherure alleging that the primary election was marred with violence, ferrying of voters, omission of results from some villages that voted, lack of election in some villages among others.
In December, Aine even sued his own party seeking to overturn its decision to deny him the party flag.
It was still unclear what kind of deliberations took place to convince him to step down from the race.
