‘Museveni Underestimated Us,’ Says Bobi Wine While Launching Nationwide Mobilization Team

Kyadondo East Member of Parliament and Presidential hopeful Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Bobi Wine has said President Yoweri Museveni was wrong to dismiss him and his People Power movement as insignificant.

With time, the MP says, the president has been and continues to be proven wrong by Ugandans.

The People Power group, which Bobi Wine describes as a social movement, he says, has grown exponentially over the past two years and is now entrenched in every corner of the country.

“At the start people thought this movement would eventually varnish,” said Bobi Wine at his home in Magere on Wednesday.

“(President) Museveni and his praise-singers dismissed us as inconsequential but people have continued to prove them wrong. He has been left exposed, and that’s why he resorted to extreme violence that was intended to wipe us off the face of earth.”

Bobi Wine was speaking this morning at the commissioning of dozens of People Power mobilizers, which are drawn from all sub regions of the country.

The team includes leaders from Kigezi,  Karamoja, Ankole, Greater Masaka, Greater Luwero, Teso, Lango, Bukedi, Rwenzori, Toro, West Nile, Kampala Metropolitan, Bunyoro, the Mabira Stretch among others.

It also includes leaders of groups such as the youths, women, people with disabilities, the informal sector as well as entertainers.

Some of the prominent members of this team include Hon Asuman Basalirwa, former Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza, Abed Bwanika, Mps Gaffa Mbwatekamwa, Robert Centenary, Kassiano Wadri, Gilbert Oulanya Medard Lubega Segona, Pauson Luttamaguzi, Brenda Nabukenya, Patrick Nsamba, Muwanga Kivumbi, Mathias Mpuga, Florence Namayanja, Francis Zaake, Anne Adeke and several others.

Other leaders include former Kampala Resident City Commissioner Aisha Kabanda, singers Ronald Mayinja, Ali Bukenya alias Nubian Li, Bukedde TV presenter Flavia Namulidwa among others.

Addressing hundreds of these leaders and supporters at his residence, Bobi Wine described the commissioning as “historic and monumental.”

He also reemphasized his plans to run for president in the 2021 elections.

“I am personally ready and willing to lead you in the struggle,” said the 37-year-old.

His team, while mostly young and inexperienced, Bobi Wine said is ready to take on leadership of the country simply because of its conviction.

“I am not here because I am highly qualified or because I am a soldier or a professor, but because I am one of the Ugandans that want and deserve a better Uganda. We are just ordinary citizens who are motivated by the conviction that out country deserves better, and we know that People Power is stronger than people in power.

The new team of leaders unveiled today, Bobi Wine claims is “not even 1% of the People Power leaders we have around the country.”

“When you tune in to radio today, there is no talk show that ends without hearing someone calling in who is a People Power coordinator from somewhere.”

Bobi Wine, since coming out to oppose President Museveni, remains the bullseye of the different security agencies.

He has been arrested numerous times, tortured in detention and had most of his music shows cancelled.

The MP says he had to commission the new leaders at his home in Magere, because “no hotel in Kampala” would accept to host them.

“Each one of the hotels we went to they told us they couldn’t host us, even when we agreed to pay. This makes us sad because the moral fiber of our nation has been killed. How can a private hotel be compelled to reject a political meeting when at the same time the president is moving freely around the country, campaigning and holding rallies?”

Despite all this however, Bobi Wine says his movement continues to position itself for leadership.

“I have to thank all Ugandans for the massive reception of our message. You received it and made it your own. There have been few times in history world over, where movements like ours gained momentum in such a short time. wherever you go, urban or rural the message is there, and is deeply appreciated”
