Kigezi College Butobere, better known as “Siniya” in Kabale district is preparing to mark 60 years of existence on 17th February 2018 and President Yoweri Museveni is expected as guest of honor.
Kigezi College Butobere was one of eight Secondary schools that were selected and set up by the colonial government to train young people who would eventually take over civil and political leadership, upon the independence of Uganda.
Other such schools are Ntare School in Mbarara, Nyakasura School in Kabarole, Tororo College and Tororo Girls, Teso College Aloit, Obote College Boroboro, Busoga College Mwiri and Kapchorwa College.
Joseph Twine Muganga, the headmaster Kigezi College says in the last 60 years the school has seen a lot of ups and downs.
He says the school that can accommodate over 1500 students had at one time its enrolment going doing to 200 students.
The population has since improved to 500 students thanks to efforts of the old students.
“The introduction of the students bursaries and teachers PTA top up, has tremendously improved academic standards of the students and the boosted the morale of teachers,” said Muganga.
Moses Ntahobari, The chairman Kigezi College Old boys association, says a number of activities for the three day Diamond Jubilee celebrations have been lined up including street cleaning and a charity walk in Kabale Municipality.
Former Chancellor Makerere and now the Kabale University chancellor, Professor George Mondo Kagonyera, who was among the 26 pioneer students, recalls tha Kigezi Collage Butobere was the first school in the region that did not emphasize the religious or ethnic background of students.
Kigezi College Butobere has in the past churned out a number important people that are now serving in important positions in Uganda and Diaspora, notable among them former Prime Minister John Patrick Amama Mbabazi, Governor Bank of Uganda Professor Tumusiime Mutebile, Chancellor Kabale University Professor Kagonyera Mondo,retired High Court judge Justice John Bosco Katutsi , former Defense PS and owner Nakasero Hospital, Dr Ben Mbonye – former Director General of Health Services Dr Sam Zaramba , Minister of security Lt.Gen. Henry Tumukunde , journalist Dr. Shaka Sali Journalist , several MPs among others.
