President Yoweri Museveni has congratulated Joshua Cheptegei upon winning a gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth games.
The President took to his Social media handle and tweeted:
“Congratulations to Joshua Cheptegei for winning gold in the Men’s 5,000m finals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Australia. Uganda is proud of you.”
This Sunday morning, Cheptegei won gold in 13 minutes 50.83 seconds, ahead of Canada’s Mohamed Ahmed in 13:52.78 and Kenya’s Edward Zakayo in 13:54.06.
Fellow countrymen Thomas Ayeko and Phillip Kipyeko came fourth and sixth in that order.
This is Uganda’s 14th gold medal overall since the start off the glamorous Commonwealth games.
Is Cheptegei destined for bigger things?
In 2012, President Museveni gave Moses Kipsiro sh20m for winning two gold medals in the Commonwealth Games in New Dheli, India.
The President also promised to build a camp house for atheletes and to upgrade a training field in the star athlete’s home district of Bukwo, then.
Whether the President will do the same for new hero Cheptegei, is still a question for tomorrow.
Cheptegei congratulatory messages continue to flow in:
Congratulations @joshuacheptege1 upon winning the 5000m race at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. You've made us proud.
