President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has praised the people of Bukhooli Central Constituency in Bugiri District, Eastern Region for voting out Hon. Wafula Oguttu.
An FDC stalwart, Oguttu was defeated by NRM’s Solomon Silwanyi in the heated 2016 MP elections.
“I congratulate the people of Bukhooli Central for voting out Wafula Oguttu who habitually fought NRM government’s programmes and was a disadvantage to the people of Bukhooli whose interests he was not serving,” said Museveni.
“I also thank you for voting NRM leaders at all levels. They are now helping me in the development of Uganda,” he added.
The President made the remarks this past weekend at a Thanksgiving ceremony for area MP, Hon Silwanyi.
The ceremony was held at Isakabisolo Primary School in Bugiri district.
A former journalist, Oguttu remains an active member of the opposition and maintains the NRM party should be removed from power over corruption and failure to deliver public services.
Meanwhile, President Museveni commended the people of the area for living together in harmony despite their diverse ethnicity and called on them to ensure that nobody divides them along tribal or religious lines.
“I thank you for living in harmony. There are Badama, Banyole, Basoga, Iteso, Bagisu and Basamia, among others, living together here. I encourage you to stay in harmony and not to allow anybody to cause divisions among you along tribal or religious leanings,” he counselled.
The President assured the people of Bugiri District that government will complete the construction of the Musita-Mayuge-Namayingo-Majanji road on to Busia.
On education, President Museveni said the two primary schools in the area – Nankoma and Isakabisolo – will each be supported with 300 iron sheets and 200 bags of cement.
Commenting on the people’s concern for water, Mr. Museveni told the gathering that government will do all it takes to provide the people of the area with water pumped from Lake Victoria to the hills and brought down by gravity flow scheme.
He also attributed to the stalled ice-plant project to the use of wrong methods of fishing by the people in the area. He, however, pledged to call all leaders and elders of Bugiri District to discuss the best ways of managing the lake.
Turning to development in general, President Museveni reiterated his call to the people of Bukhooli and Bugiri District in general to embrace the wealth creation programme introduced by the NRM government, especially the 4-acre formula, for poverty eradication at house hold levels.
The Minister for Presidency, Hon. Mbayo Esther, NRM Secretary General, Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba and Woman area MP, Hon. Agnes Taaka, among others, attended the celebrations.
