President Yoweri Museveni has sent out a number of directives to the ruling NRM party leadership at the village level, with hope to control the highly predicted chaos in its parliamentary primaries tomorrow Friday.
The president revealed in a communique that he had continued to receive complaints about issues regarding the party voter registers in different parts of the country.
In some cases, he said, there had been reports of missing registers, and in other areas, several party members missing on the registers.
According to NRM Electoral Commission Chairman Dr Tanga Odoi, in some districts party members had connived to remove some members under the pretext they are deceased whereas not.
In a letter to all National Resistance Movement Branch (Village) Executive Committees Museveni warned that this practice was against the party constitution.
“I have however, continued to receive complaints regarding the non-existence of registers in some villages and the exclusion from the registers of a significant number of party members,” Museveni said.
“I am informed that the latter was done during the process of compiling the National Register. This issue can be resolved if we stick to the principles and policies of the NRM Party that are contained in our Constitution.”
As a solution, the president suggested a number of fixes which should be implemented even on the voting day.
Amon others he ordered; members of NRM whose names appear on the register must be allowed to vote
“Any NRM member whose name is not on the party register shall be immediately added to the register and permitted to vote if,” he said.
“Where there are no registers, the Branch (Village) Executive Committee shall verify and register all members eligible to vote.”
President Museveni called on the executives to ensure that the activity is handled transparently, either prior to or on the voting day by the Branch and should not be a source of conflict.
“Copies of registers used should immediately after this exercise be forwarded to the Secretary General of the NRM.”
