President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Yoweri Museveni has given clearance to Major General Timothy Sabiiti Mutebile to run for political office in the 2021 general elections.
Gen Mutebile is the Commander of the Engineering Brigade in the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF).
Mutebile made the revelation yesterday and announced that in July he will be formally retiring from the army.
General Mutebile, who has served 33 years in the army says President Museveni okayed his bid for the Kabale Municipality MP seat in 2021.
Speaking yesterday during the Eid al-Fitr prayers at Kirigime Mosque in Kabale Municipality, Gen Mutebile said he recently met the President who promised him total support.
“Recently I met President Museveni and he told me that he received the petition from the people of Kabale municipality who asked him to allow me stand as MP. He told me the that he had accepted the request of the people and that he is to support me,” Mutebile said.
He added that the people of Kabale municipality “have been like orphans, being represented by a person that has no seat on the big table.”
Kabale Municipality is currently represented in Parliament by Andrew Aja Baryayanga, an NRM leaning Independent, who has held the seat since 2011 when he defeating then state minister of tourism Serapio Rukundo.
Several other people have shown interest in the seat including Dan Musinguzi Nabasa, Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha, Dr Thaddeus Nicholas Kamara, Alex Muhwezi Edgar, and Justus Muhangi.
General Mutebile is the younger brother to Joseph Mutebile who unsuccessfully run for the same seat twice in 2001 and 2011. Both are brothers to Central Bank governor Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile.
