Veteran journalist and political commentator Mr Andrew Mwenda has advised opposition forces to embark on a rigorous voter mobilization campaign if they are to win the 2021 general elections.
Speaking Monday at the launch of the Research World International public opinion poll at Hotel Africana in Kampala, Mwenda said criticism of electoral processes by Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) stalwart Dr. Kizza Besigye are disadvantageous to pro-change forces.
He claims Besigye’s distaste will only worsen voter apathy which has previously played in President Yoweri Museveni’s favor.
In regards to this, he said only the Kyadondo East MP Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu’s funa endagamuntu clarion call was a viable mechanism to end Museveni’s 33 year hold onto power.
“What Museveni needs is Besigye to continue campaigning that elections will be rigged. If he can reduce voter turnout by about 65%, he will get 55% or 65%. This Kyagulanyi has the best strategy I have seen. Kyagulanyi argues that Museveni can be defeated, people should register and vote. Because of that he can easily get people to show up”, he opines.
According to this RWI poll, 90% of the 2,042 adults interviewed have national identity cards while 10% do not.
Mwenda says Museveni can be defeated if opposition forces focus on either swaying undecided voters to their camp or eating into the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) support base.
According to this opinion poll conducted between 12th to 29th April, President Museveni’s support has declined to 32% with his closest opponents Hon. Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine and Dr. Besigye at 22% and 13% respectively.
This survey was done in 240 selected sub-counties in Uganda and participants were selected randomly.
