Murder Suspect Rearrested Upon Release, After Spending 12 Years On Remand

Drama unfolded yesterday at the Kampala High Court as officers rearrested one Baker Walusimbi, a suspected serial killer, shortly after bail

High Court registrar in charge of criminal matters Mary Ikit had just released Walusimbi on bail after fulfilling all the set terms.

But as he set out from the court building, he was grabbed by officers and taken to the Central Police Station.

Police declined to comment on whether or not he was charged afresh.

Walusimbi was arrested in 2006 on charges of kidnapping, raping and murdering university girls, whose bodies he allegedly dumped in thickets.

After 12 years on remand at Luzira Upper prison, he was yesterday released on a Shs. 5 million non-cash bail by Justice Yasin Nyanzi, who observed that it was unfair to continue keeping him on remand.

Walusimbi’s trial stalled for over ten years because the appointed court assessors who had been assigned to follow his trial on behalf of the public went missing.

Justice Nyanzi ordered that Walusimbi should be released on bail as he awaits fresh trial.

Chief Justice Bart Katureebe on a number of occasions has called upon stakeholders to respect court orders, and decried the re-arresting of suspects soon after their release.
