Murder in the City: Woman Stabs Man 5 Times in the Heart at Top Five Hotel in Ntinda

At exactly 12:20am on Sunday, June 9, 2019, Ntinda Police station received a phone call.

It was Ntinda Local Council 1 chairman Joel Kedi on the line.

Without mincing words, Kedi, 35, reported a case of murder at Top Five hotel.

He said an unidentified woman had stabbed a man in room number 206 on the second floor of the hotel.

Ntinda Police registered the case under number CRB; 159/2019 before detectives swung into action.

On arrival at the hotel located along Mutesa 1 road, police were shocked by what they found.

The lifeless body of Alex Otula was “lying in pool of blood with multiple knife stab wounds in chest area,” says Kampala Metropolitan police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire.

He also says “there were signs of scuffles in the room,” adding, “The properties were scattered.”

There also was alcohol and food on the table presumed to be for the deceased, according to Owoyesigire.

It remains unclear who started the fight. Detectives will also establish if the murder was premeditated.

The hotel management could as well come under fire over how a knife ended up in the couple’s hotel room.

Hotels are required to conduct physical checks of its guests as a security measure.

Owoyesigire said the “knife suspected to have been used for stabbing was recovered in a flower pot next to the door” and will possibly be used as an exhibit.

Police quickly recorded statements from the hotel staff to help in inquiries.

They are acting manager, Ronald Sasaji, 29 and the caretaker, Finmond Gebremicha, 26, an Eritrean National.

Upon inquiries, police say the main suspect has since been apprehended and confessed to the murder.

“Irene Apio Akello, 24, who hails from Lamwo district, has been arrested,” says Owoyesigire.

“This was after a tip off from people who saw her  movements last night,” says Oweyesigire, adding, “We mounted an operation there after and follow her up till she was finally arrested.”

He says Akello admitted to have “stabbed the Otula by accident in the chest from behind.”

Friends of the deceased say Akello was Otula’s wife but the duo was struggling with marital problems.

The body of the deceased was last night taken to Mulago Referral Hospital.

Owoyesigire says the motive of the murder is yet to be established.
