Rwenzururu King, Charles Wesley Mumbere in his Christmas message to his people reminisced about the 2016 clashes between military personnel and royal guards that left 86 people dead, including 16 policemen.
Following the raids, Mumbere, was arrested and charged on counts of murder, aggravated robbery and treason.
He is still undergoing trial at Jinja High Court.
The message released December 26 reads in part, “We all remember the difficult and mournful time we went through during the Christmas season of last year 2016 when many of our people had died and I together with several people arrested and imprisoned following the unfortunate events that took place at the time.”
It adds, calling for peace: “However, I thank God for taking us this far with relative peace throughout the Rwenzori region. I thank you for remaining peaceful and resolute to maintain peace in your villages all over Rwenzoi and for remaining faithful and supportive of Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu. I reiterate the importance of peace-building and harmonious co-existence as pre-requisite for community development.”
In conclusion, he wrote, I wish you a happy festive season and a happy and prosperous New Year 2018.
