Two former students of Makerere University (MUK) have requested their Alma mater to negate Professor William Bazeyo’s bid for Deputy Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration over forged documents.
Sam Ninsiima and Amos Welike say that whereas candidates for this slot were supposed to have a PhD or Doctorate, Bazeyo reportedly submitted a PhD from an unrecognized University.
This is contained in an August 10, 2020, letter addressed to the Chairperson of Makerere University’s Senate Search Committee.
According to this letter, the petitioners’ lawyers of Birungi, Nalunkuma and Company Advocates contend that the Atlantic International Institute, from which Bazeyo acquired the said award, is not recognized anywhere.
“Prof William Bazeyo obtained his PhD from Atlantic International University which is not accredited by agencies recognized by the US Department of Education,” the letter reads.
“Awards of the Atlantic International University are not recognized by the National Council for Higher Education in Uganda either,” it further states.
They say when this matter was brought to the attention of Makerere University on June 29, 2020, the Academic Registrar (AR) turned evasive.
“Instead, on July 17, 2020, we received a reply from the Academic Registrar informing us that the mandate of confirmation of accreditation status of higher institutions lies with the National Council of Higher Education,” their clients contend.
Documents unearthed by ChimpReports indicate that Ninsiima and Welike wrote to the AR on June 29, 2020 and he duly responded about three weeks later.
“Whereas potential students may seek clarification on the accreditation status of various education institutions, confirmation of accreditation status is the mandate of the National Council for Higher Education,” he responded concisely.
Upon cross checking with the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), the petitioners say they have beyond reasonable doubt discovered that Bazeyo does not possess such qualifications.
As such, they want him to be scrapped from the list of those vying for this position before Makerere’s image goes to the dogs.
“For the sake of the integrity of this search process, the image and reputation of Makerere University, we demand that Prof Bazeyo be dropped immediately from the list,” the lawyers argue.
NCHE Stand Point
A paper trail shows that Pius Achanga, NCHE’S Director of Quality Assurance and Accreditation reverted to the duo on July 29, 2020, vindicating their fears.
