Uganda’s top tennis player Duncan Mugabe has sealed his place in the main draw at the ongoing International Tennis Federation(ITF) Pro Circuit tournament in Lugogo, Kampala.
Mugabe defeated Peruvian national Andre Ku Meza 3-1 in the second round on Monday to advance to the next stage of the month long tournament.
In the first set Mugabe eased winning 6-1 but Ku Meza staged a comeback in the second set to win 6-3 and draw the game level.
This meant, the two had to play a decisive set. Mugabe managed to fight hard and seal the set with a 6-4 score.
To reach this phase, Mugabe had outclassed Britain’s Joe Cooper in the first round on Saturday winning the game 6-2, 6-3.
Mugabe will now face tournamentt’s seed 3 Shalva Dzhanashiya on Tuesday in the first game into the main draw.
Another Ugandan player David Oringa failed to make the grade falling 6-2, 6-3 to Javresh Punguya from India who is ranked sixth at the tournament.
Serbia’s Ivan Nedelko who is the most ranked player at the circuit eased past Emmett Ward from USA with a 6-2, 7-5 win.
