Police have confirmed the arrest of a father who allegedly defiled his one year and seven months old step-daughter.
Shaban Bayaana (26), a resident Buwama Village in Mpigi District, is currently being detained at Mpigi Police station facing defilement charges.
“We condemn this ruthless act and request all people outside there to desist from doing such acts,” Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson told journalists at the Uganda Media Centre on Friday.
Enanga said that suspect committed this crime on Thursday, when his wife who is the mother of the victim, had gone to the market to buy some things.
“When she returned at around 1:00 pm, she found her husband hurriedly leaving and asked him where their daughter was. He pointed to where the baby was as he took off,” Enanga said.
Police said that the mother was shocked when she realized that the man had just defiled the baby, with his ‘dirt’ still in her private parts.
“The baby’s situation was getting worse, even the man’s dirt was still in her private parts, she was taken to the hospital and our officers arrested the man,” he added.
Defilement, according to Uganda’s laws, is the act of having sex with girls under 18.
Police reports indicate an increase in the cases of defilement.
Uganda’s 2016 police crime report indicates that defilement cases alone rose by 34 percent, from 13,118 in 2015 to 17,567 in 2016. Rape cases reported, according to the report, also increased, from 1,419 to 1,572.
