The Kasese Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Winnie Kiiza has petitioned parliament over the deadly shootings that took place at Lubiriha market in Mpondwe town council.
Raising a matter of importance, Kiiza said 3 people were injured in Sunday’s shootout which is traced to market wrangles between two tycoons.
Among those injured was a trader whose leg was amputated and is currently undergoing treatment at Bwera hospital. The other a trader from Bushenyi is currently admitted at Mbarara University hospital.
According to the former leader of opposition, trouble emanates from wrangles between two competing abattoirs.
Particularly, Wabwirana Butchers Association has a license running till 2021 while the other is a late entrant.
“The company renewed a memorandum of understanding in 2016 and LOG gave them a mandate to run the abattoir up to 2021” Kiiza explains.
Facing local resistance, local and security leaders opted to have the two abattoirs run on alternating days to avoid collision.
This matter was re-emphasized by the Kasese Resident District Commissioner in a letter dated 19th June.
However, on Sunday, as traders ferried livestock to Lubiriha market for sale, hell broke loose.
Kiiza condemned what she called government’s decision to protect the other trader who has no understanding with it.
In response, Hon. Mario Obiga Kania the state minister for internal affairs said it was the first time he was hearing of this issue.
Obiga promised to verify this information and raise it with concerned authorities.
