Drama ensued Saturday at a fundraising event at St Theresa Girls’ Vocational Secondary School in Kabale municipality, as the area MP Hon Andrew Baryayanga Aja exchanged bitterly with his potential 2021 contender, Major General Timothy Sabiiti Mutebile.
Gen Mutebile, with the blessing of President Yoweri Museveni, retired from the army this year to prepare to take on Hon Baryayanga in the parliamentary race.
He had been working as the Commander of the UPDF’s Engineering Brigade.
Speaking at the fundraiser, Gen Mutebile started by downplaying the significance of Baryayanga in parliament, saying that for 10 years, his constituents were more or less un represented.
Quoting Isaiah 6:8 in the Bible, Mutebile said after hearing the cries of the people of Kabale municipality, “who have been orphans for the last ten years being represented by an independent candidate,” he decided to jump in the fray.
Mutebile claims thousands of his supporters wrote to the Commander in Chief, President Museveni, begging him allow the general to join politics.
Speaking in response however, Hon Baryayanga, an NRM leaning independent blasted general Mutebile, accusing him of “speaking with such arrogance and entitlement.”
“If I was unimportant as you claim, why have these people elected me twice?” he questioned.
At the event, Darius Nandinda the Kabale RDC asked politicians to always seek people’s support in peaceful way without undermining their opponents.
Others that are eyeing the Kabale Municipality seat are Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha, Dan Musinguzi Nabasa, Dr Nicholas Thaddeus Kamara, Justus Muhangi, and Rev. Ezra Bikangiso.
