Kampala Metropolitan Police South has this afternoon arrested and detained Makindye West MP Allan Sewanyana together with 31 people at Katwe Police station for defying guidelines that were set for all MP aspirants to follow through the nomination process.
According to Police, although today’s nomination exercise went on peacefully in most of Kampala Metropolitan area, there were some that violated the guidelines.
“We deployed our officers in strategic places to ensure that the exercise was carried out smoothly without any major problem. However, there are candidates who were trying to defy the EC guidelines of moving in two cars and for them they were travelling in a procession of motorcycles and motor vehicles,” said KMP spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango
Notably, candidates who violated the guidelines are Hon. Ssemujju Nganda of Kira Municipality, Hon. Allan Ssewanyana of Makindye West, Hon. Betty Nambooze of Mukono Municipality, Hon. Kato Lubwoma of Lubaga South, Wakayima Hannington Musoke, a candidate in Nansana Municipality, Mr Farouk Ntege in Makindye Division and Mr. Mathias Mulumba for Kawempe North. These were handled professionally.” Onyango said.
Over 15 motor vehicles that were part of Hon. Ssemujju’s convoy were impounded and parked at Nansana Police Station.
Meanwhile Onyango revealed that Allan Ssewanyana and Ntege are being held at Katwe Police Station with 31 of their supporters.
In Kisekka Market, a group of youths also reportedly attacked a joint security team, who were on normal routine patrol in that area, by pelting them with stones.
Police said that the youths damaged a military vehicle and they responded with teargas and four suspects were arrested and detained at CPS Kampala.
