At least three escapees from Singila Prison in Moroto District have been gunned down, Chimp Corps report.
Prisons publicist Frank Baine said the escapees were shot during a joint security operation launched on Wednesday evening.
“Seven escapees have been captured,” he said this Thursday morning.
The Ugandan armed forces are pursuing more than 200 prisoners who escaped from Moroto Central Prison.
UPDF spokesperson Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso yesterday said the “operation by the armed forces in pursuit of escapees from Singila Prison in Moroto to re-arrest them and recover the stolen guns continues. The population therefore is advised to stay calm.”
The prison break occurred at around 4:30pm.
Prisons chief, Johnson Byabashaija said the “inmates overpowered staff and took off with 14 guns from the armory.”
He said one of the escapees was “killed at gate,” adding, “215 warriors are still at large. The pursuit is on by UPDF, Uganda Police Force Prisons.”
On Thursday afternoon, Byabashaija said he was didn’t have fresh updates, emphasising he was “still in the field.”
ChimpReports understands the situation remained very fluid.
In an exchange of gunfire with prisoners, a UPDF soldier was also killed.
Most of the escapees are warriors who were recently arrested in military operations countering cattle rustling in Karamoja.
UPDF choppers were dispatched to Moroto Mountain in a manhunt for the escapees.
