Reigning Miss World Vanessa Ponce De Leon wore a stunning champagne colored gown from Uganda’s award winning celebrity stylist Christine Akello well known as Tina Brad.
While at the Miss Uganda 2019 grand finale on Friday 26 at Sheraton Hotel Kampala, our attention was at Vanessa’s elegant dress.
Dressing such a highly recognized personality would always be every designer’s Heaven on earth.
We managed to contact her stylist of the Night to give us an insight of What it meant to dress Vanessa.
She said, “I felt completely overwhelmed and overjoyed! Dressing Miss World is the highlight of my Fashion career.
Miss World liked the dress so much,I can say that I would have done more than that, but since it was on short notice,I had to present that dress.”
Speaking to Chimpreport’s Benjamen Emuk,Slyvia Namutebi,Former Miss Uganda and project coordinator Miss Uganda said that the team chose Tina’s costume due to its outstanding features.
“Miss Uganda normally works with different designers and when Tina approached us with her 3 pieces,we decided that particular dress had all what we were looking for.”
Namutebi added that, “Vanessa preferred Tina’s gown even when they had come with many of her outfits. She wanted something local, but well befitting.”
The gown was masterfully designed to showcase a chic and modern look inspired by the Gomesi, a traditional attire famous in the Central region of Uganda since 1940.
Tina shared an in-depth insight into how she expressed the beauty of the Gomesi into a gorgeous and contemporary evening gown for the reigning Miss World.
The first noticeable features on the gown are the sleeves. Traditionally, the Gomesi has to have short, puffed sleeves.
It was designed with off shoulder sleeves to give an in- vogue appeal while maintaining the frame.
The gown also had a well fitted kikooyi or Kanga, an inner garment tied underneath the linen to ensure the fabric does not stick to the body.
Probably,it was meant to accentuate the elegance and decency of the attire and Vanessa’s gown had all it should.
Belt or Sash.
The belt on Vanessa’s gown featured a skirt spread on top of her dress, giving prominence to the final part of the Gomesi inspired look ; the Sash.
It was tied with a sash placed below the waist over the hips to not only give the attire shape but also to make it fashionable.
Miss World’s sash or belt stylishly mimicked the complete look of a Gomesi with the addition of a decorous trail.
The look was topped off with feathers subtly adorned on a top and lace on the bottom of the gown.
Asked why she choose the feathers, Tina told Chimpreports that, it was because they are this seasons’ turned out fashion trend.
The gown, blended beautifully with the champagne color; the feathers were quite on point.
According to Tina,She wanted Miss World Vanessa Ponce De Leon, to grace the event dressed in an outfit that embodied comfort, tradition, in- fashion and elegance.
The event that was successful organized by Talent Africa and sponsored by MTN Uganda, saw a 24- year old Oliver Nakakande crowned Miss Uganda 2019.
