Former First Lady Mama Miria Kalule Obote, 82, is in critical condition after being admitted in hospital this past Sunday, Nov,4.
Mama Miria’s son, Jimmy Akena said the patient is struggling with a chest infection at a medical facility he didn’t name.
“The medical team are now assessing the possibility of her suffering from viral pneumonia and such that last night, 9th November, she was moved to the High Dependency Unit for closer monitoring,” said Akena.
Coincidentally, Mama Miria 54 years ago today wedded then Prime Minister, Apollo Milton Obote.
Akena, who is Lira Municipality MP, said the medical team is “working competently towards restoring her (Miria) good health.”
Miria Obote returned to Uganda from Zambia in October 2005, after 20 years in exile, to bury her husband.
Two months later, she was elected as head of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and as its presidential candidate for the next election.
The UPC was founded by her husband and led by him until his death. She garnered 0.6 percent of the vote in the February 23, 2006 presidential election, which was won by the sitting president, Yoweri Museveni.
Akena today by “virtue of this situation, we will not be able to host the Milton Obote Memorial Lecture earlier scheduled for 16th November.”
