Minister Orders More Police Guards For Mbale Woman MP After Death Threats

Internal Affairs Minister Gen Jeje Odongo has directed police to assign two more guards to Mbale Woman MP Connie Nakayenze Galiwango after she received death threats last weekend.

An anonymous letter was last Thursday dropped at Ms Galiwango’s residence in Butaleja cell, Masaba ward, in Mbale Municipality.

Police have now moved to beef up the legislator’s security.

Elgon Region Police spokesperson John Tukei said they are ready to protect the MP.

The letter, which was seen by this website, read: “Dear Honourable Connie, we have been sent to clear you within this week unless you raise four hundred million on this number, 0780723011.”

The authors of the letter say they are the MP’s Old Girls at Mbale Secondary School for the year 2009-2012. The number in question is found registered in the names of Moses Namisi.

However, Ms Galiwango said she was hesitant on taking up the police officers because the DPC has refused to return one of the officers who were guarding her previously.

She said that she has reported several cases to police with no action, and questions why the DPC is now dictating which officers should form part of her security detail.

She fears that the police is being used by her political opponents to compromise her security.

Nakayenze says that unidentified people have been trailing her both in Kampala and Mbale since 2017 when she voted against a move to lift the cap on the presidential age from the Constitution.
